High Speed Broadband (HSBB) is a broadband service that offers bandwidth delivered at network speeds of 10Mbps and above when compared to normal broadband (Broadband to the General Population (BBGP)) which delivers bandwidth through wired and wireless technologies at network speeds ranging between 256Kbps and 4Mbps. Eventually in Malaysia, we will see basic HSBB packages offering network speeds between 20-50Mbps and up to 100 Mbps for consumers while businesses will have maximum network speeds available up to 1,000Mbps (1Gbps).
HSBB Deployment in Malaysia
To understand the deployment of HSBB, we must first understand the role HSBB plays in the larger world of broadband deployment in Malaysia. Broadband deployment in Malaysia is carried out using two approaches – normal broadband, known as Broadband to the General Population (BBGP) delivered via wired (DSL) and wireless technologies (WiMax, WiFi, 3G/HSDPA) while the other will be through HSBB.
BBGP (via both wired and wireless modes) is deployed nationwide while HSBB ( available only through the wired mode) will only initially be concentrated in the Klang Valley, Iskandar Malaysia and key industrial zones throughout the country. It is expected that 1.3 million premises will have the ability to access HSBB coverage by end 2012.
The picture below illustrates the deployment of broadband in Malaysia.
HSBB Technology Mix
HSBB delivered to consumers and businesses will be through a mix of Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH)*, Ethernet-to-the-Home (ETTH)**, Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line 2 (VDSL2)*** and Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line 2+ (ADSL2+)**** technologies. In greenfield (new development) areas, FTTH will be the pre-dominant technology used for both residential and commercial properties, whereas, brownfield (existing development) areas will be served by FTTH, ETTH, VDSL2 and ADSL2+ technologies depending on the types of properties and services to be deployed.
The diagram below illustrates this.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------* Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) – the physical delivery of fibre optic cables directly to homes & businesses replacing the existing copper lines
** Ethernet-to-the-Home (ETTH) – a generalised fibre solution evolving from a circuit switched model to an entirely packet switched model using Ethernet as opposed to Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)
*** Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line 2 (VDSL2) – an access technology using existing copper lines which is the newest and most advanced standard of DSL broadband wireline communications
**** Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line 2+ (ADSL2+) - an access technology using existing copper lines that is able to extend the capability of basic ADSL by doubling the number of downstream bits.
HSBB & The Digital Lifestyle Experience
Consumers will be able to :
download large (file size) DVD quality movies and music video clips in a matter of minutes or even a few seconds depending on the file size.
enjoy a new TV experience through TV over broadband (IPTV) with access to TV channels over a private network in high definition format with high stability. IPTV also offers the ability for high content user interactivity.
work from home and stay in touch with the office, clients and business associates anywhere in the world in real time through high speed Internet, video and voice connections.
have a richer, secure shopping and e-commerce experience from the comfort of their homes by accessing virtual shops on-line around the world through real time video and chat.
play on-line games simultaneously with anyone in the world in real time.
access educational services such as ‘study on-line’ and participate in virtual classroom discussions with their tutors anywhere in the world as well as enjoy a rich research experience by being able to download books, journals and magazines in a matter of minutes.
receive medical diagnosis and advice in the comfort of their homes or offices from medical practioners locally and abroad in real time through high speed Internet, high definition video and voice connections.
